since 2014 at the university of applied science Schwaebisch Gmuend

Challenge Directly after my master, I started teaching Interaction Design and Digital Culture at the university of applied sciences in Schwaebisch Gmuend. Teaching interaction design in the course of communication design is a great challenge. They only have less foreknowledge in the field of digital and user centred design. The first challenge was also to develop the curriculum of this course since this has not yet been taught in this course. How might I activate the curiosity of the students and bring closer the complete process of UX-Design with all methods? Result The students usually work in groups of two people. The final outcome is a prototypical realisation of a digital smartphone application or service. The students always focus on user needs and their interactions within various context. Depending on the concept and medium, the nature of implementation can be distinct differently. The application can be simulated either, or implemented as an interactive prototype. Approach The main objective is the acquisition of design methods that are fundamental for the development of user and experience centred software. Many essential aspects of interface design will be conveyed, including conceptual, technical and design aspects. The goal is to provide technical and theoretical methods for the analysis, development and design of user interfaces. The students acquire knowledge in conception and composition of user interfaces and other basic interaction principles. In the final phase, an interface will be prototypically realised with easy-to-use prototyping tools.
