Writing about how AI changes design — and how design should shape AI.

Since 2024 I've been researching what happens to the designer's role when systems stop generating and start acting — and which interfaces we need once they do. A peer-reviewed book chapter and two essays in the Bitkom Digital Design Jahrbuch.

“Vom Gestalten zum Kuratieren: Autonomie im hybriden Designprozess”

From designing to curating: autonomy in the hybrid design process

In: Designforschung und KI — Ästhetische Transformation im Zeitalter artifizieller Systeme, ed. Lars C. Grabbe. Springer Fachmedien, Wiesbaden 2025, pp. 87–105 · Sole author.

A peer-reviewed examination of how generative AI changes the way designers work, developed through interviews with experienced designers from Germany, Switzerland and Canada. The chapter argues for the Augmented Designer: whoever actively curates and modifies AI-generated proposals keeps their own signature while opening up new design possibilities — and it names the skills this requires if aesthetic diversity is to survive hybrid design processes.

“Jenseits des Chats: Die Architektur der Control-Aware UX”

Beyond chat: the architecture of Control-Aware UX

Bitkom Jahrbuch Digital Design 2025, pp. 92–110 · Sole author

Chat was the bridge technology. As AI shifts from answering to acting, control becomes a design problem — and digital sovereignty means more than data ownership: it is the ability to intervene at any moment, and the felt confidence that you could. The essay develops Control-Aware UX across three levels — normative (why), procedural (how) and mechanical (what) — and describes four post-chat UI archetypes: Spatial Canvas, Contextual Overlay, Property Panel and Agentic Dashboard.

“KI-gestütztes Design: Neue Kompetenzen und ein erweitertes Ethos im digitalen Zeitalter”

AI-supported design: new competencies and an expanded ethos in the digital age

Bitkom Jahrbuch Digital Design 2024, p. 62 · Sole author

From craftsperson to Augmented Designer: how generative AI shifts the designer's role from execution to curation, why augmented creativity rather than automation is the productive frame — and which competencies and ethical responsibilities that role brings with it.
