Talks & Lectures

Talking about what happens to interfaces when AI stops answering and starts acting.

I speak at universities, meetups and in-house sessions — about human–AI interaction, interface history and the craft behind digital products. Since 2014 I also teach UX and interaction design at the HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd.

2026/07 · Conference talk

“Designing for Control & Steering — Beyond Chat: designing control into agentic AI”

UXCOMM.AI, BMW Group IT

A talk at BMW Group IT’s internal UX conference, in three movements: why chat breaks as AI shifts from answering to acting, the Control-Aware UX framework, and the pattern catalogue live — five lanes from inline controls to agent workflows, demonstrated on Property Panel, Spatial Canvas, Editable Plan, Citation Trail and AI Memory.

Slide: AI feels like the early web again — a 1998 web browser next to a 2026 AI tool Slide: From Catalog to Practice — five pattern lanes with the number of patterns in each Slide: From Prompting to Control & Steering — Steerability, Trust, Sovereignty

“Beyond Chat — Designing for Control in Human–AI Interaction”

Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt

From command to co-creation: why chat is a bridge technology and how Control-Aware UX makes AI autonomy tangible. Based on my research with 78 interactive prototypes exploring spatial controls, autonomy dials, confidence signals and supervisor dashboards.

Slide: AI changes the unit of design work — from execution to judgment Slide: DOPE — Directability, Observability, Predictability, Explainability Slide: Designer Sovereignty — Agency, Taste, Judgment, Steering

“Designing for Control — From Command to Co-Creation in Human–AI Interaction”

Hochschule Aalen

Why chat becomes a command bottleneck once AI starts acting, and what replaces it: a three-layer model that separates the normative question (why), the procedural one (how) and the interface itself (what). The second half turns the framework into a research programme — reliable control in safety-critical contexts, meaningful explanation as a basis for trust, and visual, parametric and canvas-based alternatives to the prompt.

Slide: Chat as a command bottleneck Slide: The three-layer model — normative, process, interface Slide: Synthesis — Directability as the foundation of human autonomy

2024/03 · Meetup

“AI's role in strategic storytelling: from concept to creation”

Star Connects Meetup, Star Space, Munich

A hands-on session exploring how AI can streamline strategic storytelling for designers. The talk introduced a framework for creating concise, visually engaging narratives with AI tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney and Runway, aimed at improving how product visions are communicated to stakeholders and end users. Co-presented with Thomas Helmer.

2021/06 · Guest lecture

“GUI — Graphical User Interfaces”

M.A. User Experience Design, Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt

A lecture on the evolution, fundamentals and future of graphical user interfaces — from the history of the discipline to the principles that make interfaces intuitive: visual appeal, consistency, efficiency and responsiveness. It closed with a forward-looking question: whether the best interfaces might ultimately be the ones you cannot see.

Slide: UX ≠ UI ≠ GUI — three nested circles Slide: Create groupings — Miller’s Law, 7 ± 2 Slide: The best interface is no interface

2018/04 · Conference talk

“Trends im digitalen Produktdesign — Eine neue Generation von kollaborativen Tools”

Kreativforum Ostwürttemberg, Aalen

Digital tools shape the working day of a whole profession — especially the ones used for communication and creative collaboration. The talk looked at the designer as a communicative medium and at the three trends accelerating the digital product process: real-time collaboration, version control and knowledge transfer.

2014 · Lab talk

Lab-Talk on the master's thesis “MNEMO”

Intuity, Stuttgart

Presented Martha Miosga's and my MNEMO thesis at Intuity in a brown bag lunch format — insights into memory, emotional engagement and what it means to design a camera that is triggered by feeling rather than by a button.

Teaching

Since 2014 · Lecturer

User Experience & Interaction Design

Hochschule für Gestaltung / University of Applied Sciences, Schwäbisch Gmünd

Teaching the entire design process from problem definition to high-fidelity prototyping. I guide students through the scientific discourse on the impact of digitalisation on society and supervise interactive information visualisation projects.
